Karl Soukup
* Trumpet & Composition

Karl Soukup is a chameleon. His musical interests, influences, and endeavors vary widely and reflect a diverse educational background. Under the tutelage of Symphonic trumpeter Calvin Price, Mr. Soukup began his early musical studies by laying a solid foundation in classical trumpet performance technique. Throughout his undergraduate studies, he continued to explore other performance styles including brass chamber, big-band jazz, cool jazz, bebop, free jazz, fusion, and avant-garde. Mr. Soukup also studied jazz improvisation and composition with pianist Rick Helzer. Towards the end of his bachelor studies, it became apparent that Karl had a talent and affinity for arranging and composition. In 1996 he went on to study Jazz & Commercial Composition at Manhattan School of Music, with notable composers Ed Neumeister, Jim McNeely, and his private teacher Manny Albam, who's influence can be heard in many of Karl's jazz arrangements. Karl went on to obtain his Masters degree in 2008 from SDSU where he studied privately with Brent Dutton, Gilbert Castellanos, and Rick Helzer.

Today, Mr. Soukup makes a career of various musical endeavors. He continually accepts commissions to compose new works for local large and small ensembles and for commercial projects. These pieces include classical works for chamber orchestras and brass ensembles, jazz music for big bands and combos, horn charts for corporate bands, and commercial music for theme parks and the video game industry. He also teaches privately from his home studio, and performs often with his brass ensembles, at local theme parks, and with various other San Diego-based ensembles.

In 2004, Mr. Soukup produced a traveling show for SeaWorld San Diego which promoted the opening of their newest attraction "Journey to Atlantis". This production included live performance elements, video segments, lighting effects, and puppetry. The picture to the right shows the "Lord of the Seas" puppet being operated from behind a silk "water-wall" which blocks the audiences view of the puppeteers.

Karl currently teaches music at Mission Bay Montessori Academy, St. Augustine Catholic High School, Helix Charter High School, and at San Diego State University. You can hear some of Mr. Soukup's work in this summer's "Cirque de La Mer" show at SeaWorld San Diego.
